Black Homeownership Rate Increases for Third Consecutive Year
New Census data shows Black homeownership reaching its highest rate in over a decade.
The Black homeownership rate has increased for the third consecutive year, reaching 47.3% in 2025, according to new Census Bureau data. While still below the national average, this represents the highest rate in over a decade.\n\nExperts attribute the gains to targeted down payment assistance programs, fair lending enforcement, and increased participation in first-time homebuyer programs. Community land trusts and housing cooperatives have also expanded homeownership opportunities in urban areas.\n\n"Homeownership is the cornerstone of wealth building," said Housing and Urban Development Secretary Michael Williams. "These gains represent real progress in closing the racial wealth gap."\n\nHowever, advocates note that challenges remain, including discrimination in lending and appraisals, and call for continued investment in programs that support Black homebuyers.
